Le Big Gig
“LE BIG GIG” What, Where, When, Who & How?
Primarily a Gig holiday on a beautiful lake in Brittany. A fun weekend with some serious racing thrown in. The hope is to make it a Gig festival.
The aim is to also train some locals so they can join in some fun (probably on the Sunday), leave a legacy and make it repeatable every year.
We hope to have live music, shanty singing, dancing, local food and drink (Breton cider!) and we are engaging with the local tourist board to help ensure that it’s a success for all concerned.
Lac du Guerledan is a 10km lake with bends, beaches, slipways and everything we need very nearby – including camping, fixed caravans, hotels and gites all within a walk.
One of our founding members now lives very close to the lake and it sounded like a great idea! There is already a strong bond between Brittany and Cornwall and all things Cornish – so Gig racing fits the bill nicely. Apparently smugglers used to row from Brittany to Cornwall so there’s some heritage. The location sounds perfect – with great transport links for UK and European rowers (we will be inviting crews from The Netherlands, Italy and Spain).
Plus it’s fun, a bit different, inclusive and could turn into something special.
We have general Mayoral approval but there’s a lot more detail required. We are working behind the scenes to get the finer detail together but it works both ways and we do need an estimate of who is likely to be coming to help with planning and logistics, etc.
We will do whatever we can to keep the costs down, to provide as much useful info as possible as soon as possible and to keep it fun, inclusive and simple so that everyone can relax and enjoy themselves.
But, we do need as many gigs as possible.
